How do I start behind-the-wheel lessons?
First, you’ll need to get a valid learner’s permit issued by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. You must be at least 15 1/2 years of age to get a learner's permit.
If you’re under 18, you’ll also need to complete 36 hours of a State Approved Driver’s Education program. This is an "in-classroom" course. Check with your local high school or DMV for approved driver's education course program. The Virginia Association of Driver Education and Traffic Safety (VADETS) offers a state-approved course online. Go to www.vadriveredu.org or call (804) 512-0101.
Go to our Sign Up page or click on the start button below to schedule lessons.
What does it cost?
For those Under 18 years of age, the cost for the required behind-the-wheel lessons is $265. To obtain your license in the State of Virginia if you are under 18 years of age, you are required to complete a 36- hour driver education course prior to taking the required 14 behind the wheel lessons program. The behind-the-wheel lessons program consists of 7 fifty-minute sessions of driving with an instructor and 7 fifty-minute sessions of observing another student drive. The road skills test is administered by the driving school which provided the behind-the-wheel lessons.
For adults 18 years and older, the cost is $55 per hour. In the State of Virginia, if you are 18 years and older, behind-the-wheel lessons are not required unless you have failed the Road Skills Test given by the Virginia DMV three times. If you failed the Road Skills Test 3 times you will need to take 14 one-hour sessions from a DMV certified driving school before retaking the test. The adult in-vehicle recertification course is $635.
Rather than taking the road skills test at the DMV, adults, 18 years and older, have the option to take a 36-hour driver education course and the behind-the-wheel lessons and final road skills test with a commercial driving school. Go Driving does not currently offer the 36-hour driver education course. The 14 behind-the-wheel lessons program is $265.
Who do I pay and what do you accept?
